Review of Rene Izquierdo's Concert
Recently, I attended a concert of the South Bay Guitar Society in which Rene Izquierdo performed. My review of the concert is as follows.
- Summary: On Saturday, I attended Rene Izquierdo’s guitar concert. Izquierdo presented several songs, about half of which were Spanish. These songs came from a variety of time periods and composers, including J. S. Bach. The performance was solely instrumental, and was not accompanied by any voice or other instrument. The duration of the concert including the intermission was about two hours.
- Performers: The concert had only one main singer, although there was a fifteen minute prelude by sixteen year old Francesca Boerio. Izquierdo stood out to me because of his relaxation while presenting all the songs. He did not seem to be scared of holding a conversation with the audience, and rather than being self conscious, he enjoyed playing the music. In addition, he made jokes between the songs. Izquierdo was not even afraid to present Cuban folk songs as requested. Perhaps his ease of presentation was due to his experience.
- Instruments: Throughout the concert, Izquierdo only played the guitar. Despite that, he managed to incorporate variety in his pieces through high and low notes, fast and slow tempos, and quiet and loud sound. He also had atypical ways of using his guitar, such as to make drumming sounds. One other thing that I noticed was that he adjusted the pegs of the guitar between songs.
- Venue: Trianon Theatre is a beautiful building, both on the inside and outside. It was built to reflect the Grand Trianon of Versailles, France. It seats approximately 300 people, and has excellent acoustics. The theater was illuminated with hanging lights, and also possessed a sunroof. The audience comprised of mainly middle-aged and elderly people. The performer and the audience were dressed mostly casually and semi-formally.
- Recommendation: I would recommend watching a concert by this player to someone who is willing to spend a couple of hours listening to relaxing music. Overall, I enjoyed attending Izquierdo’s concert, because of his presentation and the skill with which he performed. The environment of the theatre added to my appreciation of the concert.
